Meet Peter Hunter
Bachelor of Information Technology
Updating His Experience and Knowledge
Peter Hunter is already working in the information technology field, and has been for seven years, but he still thought it worthwhile to go back to school and get a Bachelor’s degree in IT. He enrolled at AIU South Florida in June 2004.
“My goal was to look for an institution with high educational standards, a great learning environment, and the flexibility in scheduling to allow me to not only graduate in a short amount of time but also to continue working while going to school. It was not an easy choice until I received some information about AIU and then visited the school during an Open House.” From the moment he set foot on campus, Peter knew American InterContinental University was the school for him.
“AIU offered everything I was looking for to help me increase my knowledge and make me more competitive in the demanding job market. The school has small classes, a flexible schedule, and finally, infrastructure where each student can have a laptop [on loan] to facilitate the learning process.”
A native of Lima, Peru, Peter immigrated to the U.S. with his wife Monica in 1992. He arrived in the U.S. with the Peruvian equivalent of an Associate’s degree in computer science. “That degree has been enough for me to get a job in IT; now I want an IT job with more challenge and responsibility. For that, a Bachelor’s degree is necessary.” Peter will begin looking for a higher caliber IT job with more responsibility as soon as he graduates this December.
Peter doesn’t have to wait for a new job to use what he’s learning at American InterContinental University, though. “One of the first classes I took was about web design, and now I am doing web design by myself.” Peter had an opportunity to do some web work for his wife’s company and is also helping out friends and associates with their web needs. “I’m building my portfolio.”
While Peter enjoys AIU classes for their small size, he says that’s not the best thing about them. “Class discussions are amazing. I’m not the only student with real-world experience. Right now I’m taking a networking class, and other students are already working in that field. They have real problems and solutions from their everyday jobs to share. It is good to hear real cases. And of course the professors have all of their industry experience to share as well. Whether it’s from other students or from the professors, though, the more real-world experience in the classroom, the better for everyone.”
“Being a good parent, a good husband, and a good student is not easy, but with all the help that my wife offers and the patience my beautiful kids have with me, one of my dreams will come true by the end of this year when I graduate. Right now, all my energy is focused on becoming better prepared, gaining knowledge at AIU that will give me better opportunities to reach my professional goals.”
